Flora and fauna
Seven islands full of life. A unique territory which is home to thousands of living species, many of them exclusive to this small corner of the Atlantic. In the Canary Islands you will find plant species that disappeared in other parts of the planet millions of years ago. Others are already hundreds of years old, mute witnesses to the passing of time: think of the stories they could tell if they could speak!

¿Sabíais que las Islas Canarias es una de las regiones con mayor biodiversidad del planeta? Gozamos de gran variedad de paisajes: espectaculares volcanes y campos de lava, frondosos bosques, maravillosas playas de todo tipo, profundos barrancos, fértiles valles, impresionantes acantilados, aguas transparentes llenas de vida… Es la región española con mayor longitud de costas (1.583 km.) con sorprendentes rincones que merece la pena visitar: 146 espacios naturales protegidos, 4 Parques Nacionales, 5 Reservas de la Biosfera, 2 Patrimonios Naturales de la Humanidad y 3 Reservas Marinas.

Do you know Canarian Islands is one of the regions with the greatest degree of biodiversity on the planet? We have wide variety of landscapes: spectacular volcanoes and lava flows, dense forests, wonderfulbeaches of all kinds, deep ravines, fertile valleys, impressive cliffs, transparent waters full of life... It's the Spanish region with the most coastline (1,583 km) with delicious places to visit: 146 protected natural spaces, 4 National Parks, 5 Biosphere Reserves, 2 Natural World Heritage Sites and 3 Marine Reserves.

Numerosos científicos del pasado y del presente han considerado a las Islas Canarias como un excelente laboratorio natural y es que contamos con 17.893 especies de flora y fauna (¡¡y las que quedan por conocer!!), 3.736 de ellas, endémicas, propias de las Islas Canarias.
Tambi én es uno de los mejores lugares del mundo para la observación del universo gracias a la calidad de sus cielos, también protegidos.
Many scientists of the past and present have considered the Canaries to be an excellent natural laboratory because we have 17, 893 species of flora and fauna (3,736 of which are endemic, typical from Canarian Islands.
Canarias is also, one of the best places in the world for the observation of the universe, thanks to the quality of its skies, which are also protected.

Hoy, 22 de mayo, es el Día Internacional de la Biodiversidad de 2010, que también es el Año Internacional de la Biodiversidad. Desde aquí, queremos lanzar un mensaje para concienciar al planeta de que tenemos que vivir en armonía con el medio ambiente y velar por la continuidad de las especies, para que todos los que vengan por detrás puedan conocer y disfrutar de estos preciosas imágenes.

Today, May 22 is the International Biodiversity Day 2010, which is also the International Year of Biodiversity. From here, we want to send a message to educate the world that we have to live in harmony with the environment and ensuring the continuity of the species for everyone who come behind us can learn and enjoy as much as us with this beautiful images.
